Why Is ChatGPT So Slow? Causes and Fixes That Work

ChatGPT is usually slow for one of five reasons: OpenAI’s servers are under heavy load, your conversation has grown very long, you’re using a reasoning model that thinks before it answers, your connection is weak, or your browser or app is struggling. The fastest checks are OpenAI’s status page, starting a new chat, and switching to a faster model. Most slowdowns clear up with one of those three.

This is about ChatGPT and other cloud assistants, where the speed depends on someone else’s servers. If it’s a model running on your own phone that feels slow, the causes are completely different: see local LLM speed on your phone.

Two kinds of slow #

Notice which part is slow, because they have different causes.

  • Slow to start: a long pause before the first word appears. That’s usually server load, a reasoning model thinking, or your network.
  • Slow to stream: the words appear, but in a trickle. That’s usually server load or a very long conversation.

Is ChatGPT slow for everyone right now? #

Check status.openai.com. It lists ChatGPT’s components separately and shows partial problems, such as one feature being degraded while chat works normally. You can subscribe there for updates. If it shows an incident, there’s nothing to fix on your side. What to do when ChatGPT is down covers the backups.

Busy periods matter even without an official incident. Heavy demand after a big launch, or weekday working hours in large markets, can slow responses noticeably.

Why do long chats slow ChatGPT down? #

Every reply has to take the conversation so far into account, so the longer it grows, the more the model processes for each new answer. Very long chats also make the page itself heavy, which slows scrolling and typing in a browser.

Starting fresh is the fix. Before you do, ask for “a summary of the key points and decisions so far” and paste that into the new chat. The mechanics are in why does AI forget what I said.

Why do some models take so long to answer? #

Reasoning models are built to work through a problem before replying. That improves answers on math, code and tricky logic, and adds a pause, sometimes a long one. For a quick rewrite, a definition or a simple question, that thinking is wasted time. If your plan lets you choose, pick a faster model for everyday questions and save reasoning for the hard ones.

Quick fixes, in order #

  1. Check the status page.
  2. Start a new chat.
  3. Switch to a faster model for simple questions.
  4. Switch networks or turn off your VPN.
  5. Close other browser tabs, or use the app instead of the website (or the reverse).
  6. Disable browser extensions that touch the page, such as ad blockers and grammar tools.
  7. Update the app, or clear the browser’s site data and sign in again.
  8. Shorten the request. Split huge pastes into parts.

Is there a faster alternative? #

For speed, the answer is either another cloud assistant or a model on your own phone.

Other cloud assistants run on different companies’ servers, so they may be quick when ChatGPT is busy. They have their own peak times and limits, so this is a workaround rather than a cure.

A model that runs on your phone has no server queue and no network delay. The first word appears as soon as your phone starts working, and nothing depends on how busy anyone else is. Personal LLM runs open models such as Qwen 3.5, Gemma 4 and Ministral 3 on the phone and shows a live tokens-per-second readout on every reply, plus a built-in benchmark, so you can see exactly how fast it is on your hardware. You can also switch models mid-conversation from the chat header, starting on a small fast one and handing the hard question to a larger one.

The trade-off is that its speed depends on your phone, and a phone-sized model is less capable than ChatGPT on hard questions and can’t search the web. For short everyday tasks it’s often the quicker option.

Frequently asked questions #

Why is ChatGPT so slow today? #

The most common reasons are heavy demand or an incident on OpenAI’s side, which you can check at status.openai.com. If the status page is clear, a long conversation, a reasoning model, your connection or your browser is the likely cause.

Why does ChatGPT take so long to start answering? #

A long pause before the first word usually means a reasoning model is working through the problem, the servers are busy, or your connection is slow. For simple questions, a faster model starts answering sooner.

Does ChatGPT Plus make it faster? #

Paid plans raise usage limits and can give access to more models, which helps if you’re often switched to a slower option. They don’t make you immune to outages or busy periods. Check OpenAI’s current plan details for what each tier includes.

Is ChatGPT faster in the app or the website? #

It depends on your device. Very long chats make a browser tab sluggish, so the app often feels faster on a phone. If one is slow, try the other before assuming the problem is on OpenAI’s side.

Why does ChatGPT slow down in long conversations? #

Each reply has to process the whole conversation it can see, so longer chats mean more work per answer, and the page gets heavier to display. Starting a new chat with a short summary of the old one fixes it.
