Why is there a trade-off between smart and private? #
The best AI models are huge. They need data-center hardware, so using them means sending your words to someone else’s computer. The only way to keep text truly private is to process it on your own device, and a phone can only fit a model a small fraction of that size.

ChatGPT with privacy settings #
If you like ChatGPT’s answers, you can make it less leaky rather than leave it. Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data Controls so your chats aren’t used for training, and use Temporary Chat for anything sensitive. Temporary chats aren’t saved to your history or used for training, though OpenAI keeps them briefly for safety checks. Duck.ai #
DuckDuckGo’s Duck.ai gives you chat access to models from several companies without an account. Its privacy page makes three main promises:
- Anonymized requests. DuckDuckGo removes metadata such as your IP address before passing your prompt to the model provider.
- No training. Your conversations aren’t used to train models by DuckDuckGo or the providers.
- Short retention. Providers agree to delete prompts and responses right after generating a reply, with limited exceptions such as prompt caching of up to an hour.
Recent chats are stored locally on your device, not on DuckDuckGo’s servers. The free tier includes smaller models from OpenAI and Mistral and Google’s open Gemma 4, with daily usage limits. Larger models, including Anthropic’s Claude, need a paid DuckDuckGo subscription.
Good for: general questions where you want a strong model and don’t want it tied to you. Not for: text you can’t let leave your phone at all, since the provider still sees the words, just not who sent them.
Brave Leo #
Leo is the AI assistant built into the Brave browser on desktop, Android and iOS. Brave says no account or login is required, that Leo “doesn’t retain or share chats, or use them for additional model training,” and that it doesn’t collect identifiers such as your IP address. A premium tier adds more models and higher limits.
Leo’s standout feature is bring-your-own-model: you can point it at a model you run yourself, local or remote. That’s the most private way to use Leo, though it takes some setup.
Good for: summarizing and asking about web pages as you browse. Not for: people who don’t want to switch browsers.
Apple’s Private Cloud Compute #
When you use Apple Intelligence, many requests run on the iPhone itself. Bigger ones go to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers. Apple’s security write-up says data is used only to fulfill your request and not retained, that it’s “never available to Apple — even to staff with administrative access,” and that Apple publishes its server software images so outside researchers can check the claims.

On-device AI: the private option that works offline #
A local AI app downloads a model file once and runs it on your phone’s own chip. There’s no server, so there’s nothing to anonymize, nothing to retain and no policy to trust.
