Typing back and forth with ChatGPT or another AI chatbot uses little mobile data, because text is tiny. What drives data use up is everything around the text: voice conversations that stream audio both ways, photos and files you upload, images it generates, web searches and the app itself loading. The only reliable number is the one your phone measures, and both iPhone and Android show data use per app. An AI that runs on your phone uses no data per chat at all, once the model is downloaded.
Why text chats use so little data #
A 500-word answer is about 3,000 characters, which is roughly 3 kilobytes of text. Even with the app’s overhead of sending and receiving that text, a long text conversation is small next to a single photo or a minute of video.
That’s the core difference between cloud AI and on-device AI. With a cloud chatbot, every message travels to a data center and every answer travels back. The computing happens far away, and your connection carries the conversation. With an on-device model, the computing happens on your phone’s chip, so there’s nothing to send.

How to check how much data an AI app uses #
The numbers depend on your phone, your plan and how you use the app, so measure your own.
On iPhone #
- Open Settings → Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions).
- Scroll down to the list of apps. Each shows how much cellular data it has used in the current period.
- To measure a single session, scroll to the bottom and tap Reset Statistics, use the app as normal, then check again.
- To stop an app using cellular data at all, turn off its switch in the same list. It will then only work on Wi-Fi.
On Android #
- Open Settings and search for data usage.
- Open App data usage (on some phones, Mobile data usage under Connections).
- Tap the AI app to see foreground and background data, and set the date range you want.
- From the app’s page you can turn off background data, or turn on Data Saver to limit data for all apps.
Menu names vary between Pixel, Samsung and other brands, but searching Settings for “data usage” finds the right page.
How to use less data with AI apps #
- Type instead of talk when you’re on cellular. Voice mode is the biggest data user in most chatbots.
- Shrink photos before you upload them, or crop to the part you’re asking about.
- Skip web search for questions that don’t need current information.
- Restrict background data so apps don’t sync or refresh when you’re not using them.
- Download big things on Wi-Fi, including app updates and any model files.
- Use an on-device AI for everyday questions, which uses no data per chat.
Using AI abroad or on a limited plan #
Roaming charges and small data caps make cloud chatbots expensive or unusable when you travel. You can buy a local SIM or an eSIM, but an offline AI covers most travel needs without any: translating a menu, drafting a message in another language, explaining a sign in a photo. AI that uses no data per chat #
Personal LLM runs AI models on your phone’s own chip. The one big download is the model itself: from 0.81 GB for Qwen 3.5 0.8B up to 6.17 GB for GLM 4.6V Flash, plus 195 MB to 1 GB if you add image support to a model. Do that on Wi-Fi. Downloads can be paused and resumed, and the app checks free space before it starts.
After that, chatting, asking about photos and attaching documents use no data, because nothing is sent anywhere. The free version shows ads from Google AdMob, which use a little data when you’re online; in airplane mode, no ads load and the app keeps working. A one-time Remove Ads purchase turns them off for good.
The trade-off is that a model on your phone can’t search the web or know today’s news, as we explain in can offline AI know current events. For questions that need the internet, a cloud chatbot is still the tool.
