Most AI chatbots let you download your whole chat history, but the option is buried in settings and some only work on the web. ChatGPT and Claude email you a download link from their privacy or data settings, and Google delivers Gemini activity through Google Takeout. Apps that keep chats only on your phone work differently: there’s no server copy, so you need to make your own backup before you reinstall or change phones, or the chats are gone.
Why export your AI chats? #
- You’re switching assistants and want to keep useful answers, prompts or project history.
- You’re about to delete an account and want a copy first.
- You want a record of advice or work you might need later.
- You’re changing phones or reinstalling an app that stores chats only on the device.
- You want to see what the company holds. An export is the clearest view of what’s stored about you.
How to export your data from each service #
Menus change, so if a step doesn’t match, search the app’s settings for “export.”
ChatGPT #
Open Settings, go to Data controls, and choose Export data. OpenAI emails a link to a download containing your conversation history. Keep the email private, since the link leads to all your chats.
Claude #
Anthropic’s help article gives these steps:
- Click your initials in the lower-left corner.
- Select Settings.
- Go to Privacy.
- Click Export data.
The download link arrives by email at your account address, you have to be signed in to use it, and it expires 24 hours after delivery. Export is available in the web app and Claude Desktop, not the mobile apps.
Gemini #
Google handles exports through Google Takeout at takeout.google.com. You pick which Google products to include, choose delivery by email link or to Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box, choose a one-time or scheduled export, and pick Zip or Tgz. Google emails you when the archive is ready. Gemini conversations are part of your Google account activity, so look for Gemini or My Activity in the Takeout product list. Other chatbots #
Most major services offer an export somewhere in their privacy, data or account settings, because data protection laws in many places give you the right to a copy of your personal data. If you can’t find one, the service’s privacy policy usually says how to request it.
Backing up an AI app that runs on your phone #
On-device AI apps keep your chats only on the phone, which is the whole privacy point: there’s no server copy for anyone else to read. It also means there’s no server copy for you. If you uninstall the app, reset the phone or lose it, the chats go with it.
Personal LLM has a built-in backup for this. It saves every chat and setting as a single JSON file you keep, and you can restore from that file or straight from the clipboard. Models aren’t included, since they’re large files you can download again on Wi-Fi.
A simple routine:
- Before reinstalling or switching phones, make a backup and move the file to the new phone or somewhere you control.
- On the new phone, install the app, restore the backup, then download the models you use.
- Now and then, back up if your chats hold things you’d hate to lose.
If a crash is why you’re reinstalling, check local AI app crashing or model won’t load first. The fix is often simpler than a reinstall.
Keep the export file private #
An export is your entire chat history in one file: health questions, work documents, personal messages, all of it. Treat it like a password.
- Store it somewhere you control, such as an encrypted folder or a drive you trust, not a shared family computer.
- Delete the email with the download link once you’ve saved the file, especially for services whose links don’t expire.
- Don’t upload the whole export to another cloud AI to “migrate” your history. That hands every past conversation to a second company. Pick out the few chats you need and remove personal details first.
- Delete old exports you no longer need.
Can you move chats from one AI to another? #
Not directly. There’s no common import format between ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other apps. In practice, what carries over is what you reuse:
- Your instructions. Copy your custom instructions or system prompts into the new app. Our system prompt examples show how to structure them.

- Specific documents or answers. Save them as text, Markdown or PDF files. Personal LLM can take those as attachments and answer questions from them, on the phone.
Export, then delete #
