Do Humans Read Your AI Chats? ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude

Yes, humans can read some of your AI chats. Google says a subset of Gemini conversations is reviewed by people, including outside contractors, and that reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete them. OpenAI and Anthropic also allow staff to review conversations in some cases, such as investigating abuse or a safety report. On top of that, your chats may be used to train future models unless you turn that off.

A few settings reduce all of this. The only way to remove it completely is to use a model that runs on your own device, where there’s no server and nobody to do the reviewing.

Why do AI companies review chats? #

Three reasons, in roughly that order of volume:

  • Improving the models. People rate and label real conversations so the next version answers better.
  • Safety and abuse. Chats flagged by automated systems, for fraud, threats or illegal content, may be checked by a person.
  • Legal obligations. Companies can be ordered to preserve or hand over data. In 2025, a court order in the New York Times lawsuit against OpenAI required it to preserve ChatGPT logs, including deleted chats.

Reviewers usually see chats with your name detached. Google says conversations are disconnected from your account before they go to reviewers. The text itself can still identify you if it contains your name, address, employer or anything else distinctive.

ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude: what happens to your chats? #

These policies change, so confirm the current setting in each app. The figures here come from Google’s Gemini privacy hub, Anthropic’s 2025 consumer terms update and OpenAI’s data controls documentation.

ChatGPT #

OpenAI says it may use your conversations for training unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings, Data Controls. Temporary Chat conversations, according to OpenAI, don’t appear in your history, aren’t used for training, and are deleted from its systems within 30 days. ChatGPT’s memory feature can also carry details between chats; you can view, delete or switch it off. See OpenAI’s data controls FAQ.

Gemini #

The Gemini Apps privacy hub says plainly that a subset of chats is reviewed by human reviewers, that reviewed chats are kept for up to three years, and that you shouldn’t enter confidential information you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see. With Keep Activity off, Google says chats are still kept for 72 hours to respond to you and for safety, then deleted unless you gave feedback. With it on, activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, and you can change that to 3 or 36 months.

Claude #

In 2025 Anthropic asked Claude Free, Pro and Max users to choose whether their chats could be used for training, with a deadline of October 8, 2025. Allow it and new or resumed chats are kept for five years. Decline and the standard retention is 30 days. Business and API accounts run on separate terms.

Four things people get wrong about this #

“Deleting a chat deletes it immediately.” Deleting removes it from your history view. Most providers keep deleted data for a period, often up to 30 days, for abuse monitoring, and longer when they’re legally required to. Chats already pulled for review or safety analysis can follow a different schedule entirely.

“Incognito or temporary mode makes it anonymous.” A temporary chat usually means the conversation isn’t saved to your visible history and isn’t used for training. It still travels to the provider’s servers, is still processed there, and is typically retained for a short safety window. More private, not invisible.

“My chats aren’t used for advertising.” That changed recently. Meta began using people’s interactions with Meta AI to personalize content and ads across its apps from December 16, 2025, excluding topics such as religion, sexual orientation, politics, health, ethnicity, philosophical beliefs and union membership (Meta). OpenAI announced in January 2026 that it would start testing ads in the free version of ChatGPT for logged-in adult users in the US. We break the differences down in do AI chatbots use your chats for ads?.

“Anything labelled ‘on-device AI’ stays on the device.” “On-device” can describe one feature in an otherwise cloud-heavy app. Apple Intelligence runs a roughly 3-billion-parameter model on the phone for many tasks and sends larger requests to its Private Cloud Compute servers. Other apps run a small local model but still send analytics, or quietly fall back to a cloud model on hard questions.

How to limit who sees your AI chats #

  1. Turn off training in each app’s privacy or data settings.
  2. Use temporary or incognito chats for anything sensitive.
  3. Turn off memory so details don’t carry into later conversations.
  4. Delete old chats you don’t need, knowing deletion may not be instant or complete.
  5. Leave out identifiers. Names, addresses, account numbers and medical record numbers rarely change the answer.
  6. Secure the account with a strong password and two-factor authentication. Anyone who gets in reads the whole history.
  7. Use a work account for work, and check what your employer’s plan allows before pasting company material into a personal one.

What to leave out of a prompt in the first place is its own skill; what not to tell an AI chatbot covers the anonymizing techniques.

Is there an AI chatbot nobody can read? #

Yes: one that runs on your phone. A local AI app downloads an open language model once and runs it on the phone’s own chip. Your messages are processed on the device and stored there. With no server in the picture there’s no reviewer, no training pipeline, and nothing at the company’s end for a court to order preserved.

Personal LLM works this way. There’s no account, no cloud sync and no analytics on your conversations. Two things touch the network: the one-time model download from Hugging Face, and Google AdMob ads in the free version, which load only while you’re online and never see your chats. Your conversations, the photos you attach and the models themselves stay on the phone.

The trade-off is capability. Models that fit on a phone, such as Qwen 3.5 4B or Gemma 4 E4B, are much smaller than the ones behind ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude. They handle writing, summarizing, explaining and brainstorming well. They’re weaker on hard reasoning and obscure facts, and they can’t search the web.

A practical split a lot of people settle on: cloud chatbots for general questions, a local model for anything personal. To check that an app really is what it claims, run the tests in how to tell if an AI app is really private.

Frequently asked questions #

Does OpenAI read my ChatGPT conversations? #

OpenAI’s policies allow authorized staff and contractors to access conversations in some cases, such as safety investigations and improving models. Most chats are never read by a person, but you can’t know which ones are. Turn off training and use Temporary Chat for sensitive topics.

Does deleting a ChatGPT chat delete it permanently? #

It removes it from your history, and OpenAI generally deletes it from its systems after a retention period. Legal holds can override that, as happened in 2025. For conversations you never want stored, use Temporary Chat or an on-device app.

Are Gemini chats reviewed by humans? #

Yes. Google says a subset of Gemini chats is reviewed by human reviewers, including trained service providers, and that reviewed chats are kept for up to three years even if you delete your activity.

Can my employer see my ChatGPT chats? #

On a company-provided account, administrators may have access under the business plan. On a personal account your employer doesn’t see your chats through OpenAI, though anything you do on a work device may be monitored under company policy.

Is an offline AI app completely private? #

From the internet, yes, if the app really runs the model locally and has no server. Test it in airplane mode. Free apps may still load ads while you’re online, and it’s never private from someone who can unlock your phone, so use a passcode and delete chats you don’t want kept.
