Only if the app clearly needs it for what you installed it to do. Accessibility access lets an Android app see what’s on your screen, including messages and passwords as you type them, and tap, swipe and type on your behalf. That’s exactly what a screen reader needs, and exactly what banking malware wants. If a flashlight, wallpaper, cleaner or “AI assistant” app asks for it without a clear reason, say no.
What does accessibility access let an app do? #
When you turn on an app under Android’s accessibility settings, it becomes an accessibility service. Depending on how it’s built, it can:
- Read what’s on the screen in other apps: text, buttons, notifications
- Watch what you do, such as which app you open and what you tap
- Perform actions for you: tap buttons, scroll, type, go back, open apps
- Stay active in the background across every app
For someone who can’t see the screen or can’t use touch easily, those powers make the phone usable. In the wrong hands they’re a remote control for your phone.
Which apps legitimately need it? #
- Screen readers such as TalkBack
- Select to Speak and other read-aloud tools
- Switch Access and Voice Access, for controlling the phone without touch
- Some automation apps, which you set up to perform repetitive taps
- Some parental control and device management apps, which you should only install from sources you trust
Many other apps work fine without it. If an app offers accessibility access as an optional extra, try it without first.
How malware abuses accessibility access #
Security researchers have repeatedly found Android banking trojans and spyware that ask for accessibility access, usually after being sideloaded outside Google Play or disguised as a harmless utility. Once granted, they can read one-time codes, capture what you type, draw fake login screens over real banking apps, and grant themselves further permissions by tapping through dialogs. That’s why the request itself is a warning sign when it comes from the wrong kind of app.
What does Google Play’s policy say? #
Google restricts how Play apps may use the accessibility API. According to Google Play’s policy:
- Only services “designed to help people with disabilities access their device or otherwise overcome challenges stemming from their disabilities” may declare themselves accessibility tools.
- Other apps using the API must show a prominent in-app disclosure explaining what data they access and how it’s used, and get your explicit consent. It can’t be buried in a privacy policy.
- “Any use of the Accessibility API that enables an app to autonomously initiate, plan, and execute actions or decisions is strictly prohibited,” except for verified accessibility tools where that serves their disability-support purpose.
That last rule matters for AI. An “AI agent” app that wants to read your screen and act on it by itself through accessibility access is breaking Play policy unless it’s a genuine accessibility tool. Apps outside Play aren’t bound by these rules at all.
Red flags when an app asks #
- The app’s purpose has nothing to do with reading the screen or controlling the phone
- It asks immediately after installing, before you’ve used it
- It pressures you: “Required to continue,” or repeated pop-ups
- It came from a link in a text, an ad or a website, not the Play Store
- It promises something too good: free premium features, phone “boosting,” battery miracles
- It asks for other powerful permissions at the same time, like device admin or SMS
How to check which apps have accessibility access #
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Look for a section named Installed apps, Downloaded apps or Installed services (names vary by phone maker).
- Tap any app you don’t recognize or no longer need, and turn it off.
If an app won’t let you turn it off, or turns itself back on, uninstall it. If you can’t uninstall it, it may have device administrator rights: check under Security settings for device admin apps, remove it there, and then uninstall. Consider running Google Play Protect’s scan as well.
What about AI assistants that operate your phone? #
AI agents that “use your phone for you” are one of the main reasons this permission is coming up again. To tap through apps on your behalf, an agent needs to see the screen, and on Android the accessibility API is one way to get that. Built-in assistants from the phone’s maker use their own system-level access; third-party apps have to ask. Before granting it, read what the app says it collects, and remember that the AI provider may process whatever the agent sees. Plenty of useful AI apps need nothing of the kind. Personal LLM, which runs AI models entirely on your phone, doesn’t request accessibility access: on Android it asks only for the camera, and only when you choose to take a photo for the AI. The model sees what you type or attach in the chat and nothing else on your phone.
